the sum of vectors is the sum of their like parts: 
  (a,b)
+(x,y)
------
(a+x,b+y)


a scaled vector is the scaling of its parts:  

k(a,b) = (ka,kb)


the inner product of vectors is the product of their like parts, added up

  (a,b)
 .(x,y)
------
 ax+by

etc ...
