I say its D what do you think?

@RainCloud @whydoihavetosignup1 @iGreen @Figureskater12

@Jhannybean

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

So you know your original function, \(y=|x|\) looks like |dw:1428695630495:dw|

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

Now what's happening to it is it is moving, and stretching. Let's analyze \(y=|x|-2\) Since the value is outside the absolute value sign and not INSIDE it, that means it directly affects the function along the Y-AXIS, meaning it moves down 2 units. |dw:1428695812314:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yayy i got i right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what about the 1/3 part?

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

Lastly, if it's a number less than 1, it will stretch. more than one it will shrink. therefore what do you think is happening to our graph that is now shifted down 2 units?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

shrinking because it is negative?

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

Not quite, \[y=\color{red}{\frac{1}{3}}|x|-2\] this is not negative, nor shrinking because it is less than 1.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhh i thought that but i had already said shrinking.... XD so it is C right?

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

Is graph C shifted UP two units or DOWN two units?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

up?

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

Yes, and your function is negative, so does that mean it is shifted UP 2 units or DOWN 2 units?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

down 2 units?

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

by negative, I mean \(y=\frac{1}{3}|x|\color{red}{-2}\) Yes, down 2 units. Therefore it cannot be answer choice C. cross that option out.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Its D!

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

Same with B. your function IS NOT shifted up 2 units, so B wont work either.

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

Yes good, you got it :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yay! i had a feeling it was D from the beginning :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you so much!

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

:D
