Can someone please help me find idioms in this poem ?! I only need 2, and I have been at this for hours and I cannot find any but maybe 1. http://www.loc.gov/poetry/180/127.html @TuringTest @tkhunny @TheSmartOne @Nnesha @inkyvoyd
and what do you think is the maybe one? :)
I know it is most likely, extremely wrong but I thought maybe this could be an idiom because it speaks of hate, but it is actually an act of love giving it a hidden meaning. I know what an idiom is, just not with this poem. but here is what I thought, maybe... You know how when I’m sleepy I nuzzle my head under your arm? Hate.
Are you able to find them?
I would say that what you chose was not an idiom. An idiom has a meaning that can't be guessed from the meaning of the words that compose it.
Okay, that is what I was beginning to think. I just don't even know where to start with this thing! I have already found similes, metaphors, hyperbole, personification, etc. However I simply cannot figure out the idioms. \(\huge\ddot\frown\)
Well I think I have perhaps found one, but you will have to find the other (I could be wrong btw). "Layers of hate, a parfait." This sentence literally describes a layered dessert made out of hate, but clearly is not talking about a layered dessert made of hate but rather how deep the hatred is.
I guess it's also a metaphor...
Hm, yes I can see how you got that. It is referring to it as a parfait of hate, when there is no such literal meaning.
Yes, I have it listed already as a metaphor :)
Ha yeah, but I don't see why a metaphor and an idiom would be mutually exclusive.
Honestly, I think one could make a pretty good case for most of the lines being idioms :P
I also thought a lot of them could represent hyperboles, because she is getting really dramatic with her hate! lol
Yeah, my eye is drawn to things like "I dissect you cell by cell, so that I might hate each one individually and at leisure." For hyperbole Which, again, I think is also an idiom...
What hidden meaning would that have?!
Well clearly if you imagine her dissecting someone cell by cell that is probably not what the poem is literally implying, wouldn't you agree?
I mean I take that line to speak to how thoroughly she hates this person
True, but I am not sure what other meaning it could have. For the record, she only hates, because she loves. <3 haha \(\huge\color{darkblue}{\ddot\smile}\)
Well maybe I'm just seeing this too simplistically, but as I said I think that literally almost every line except the first two is an idiom. The first two are the only ones that have meanings that exactly correspond to the words in the sentence. For example: "My aorta hates you. Also my ancestors." Clearly this is impossible! If we take the meaning at face value, we get a nonsensical statement. I would interpret this as "I hate you a lot," as I would with most of the other stanzas lol.
Yep, I completely agree, which is why I am so freakin' confused. x_x lol I mean, as far as I know, an aorta cannot hate anyone! hahaha x)
Well why can't we be right? Are there supposed to be exactly two idioms in the poem?
No, it just says to find 2 examples of idioms in the poem. So for all we know, we are just way over thinking it!
I am going to suggest that we are. I'm pretty confident that all stanzas except the first two and maybe a few of the later ones are idioms. I won't feel offended if you want a second opinion, but that is my answer :P
I believe you, and I already got an extension from my teacher so she can help me on finish on Monday. So I will just tell her what I found, and see if I/we are correct! Thank you for your help, and you also seem to be a fun person to talk to! ~Bree :)
Likewise, and good job on your part too :) See you around!
Thanks, See ya around!
@TuringTest We were right, the whole thing is one big idiom! I talked to my teacher, and she said that I could pick any sentences from the assignment and explain what they were exagerating, and it would count as a correct answer! All that struggling for no reason, we had it the whole time! xD
Haha that's great! Just shows to go ya, never doubt yourself when you know what you're doing makes sense ;)
