Is x^-5+cos(2x) even, odd, or neither?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

replace x by -z and see what you get

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The sum of an odd function and an even function is neither even nor odd

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So I would do -x^-5+cos(-2x)? And then it would be neither?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[(-x)^{-5}= - x^{-5} \] So the first function is odd

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[ \cos( -2 x) =\cos(2x) \] So the second function is even

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So their sum is neither

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Did you get it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes thank you!
