y=x^2-2x-5 What are the two x intercepts?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

OpenStudy (michele_laino):

Hint: if we set x=0, what do you get?

OpenStudy (michele_laino):

Hint: if we set y=0, what do you get?

geerky42 (geerky42):

What's the point in first hint?

OpenStudy (michele_laino):

I thought tha also the y-intercept was requested @geerky42

OpenStudy (welshfella):

you need to solve x^2 - 2x - 5 = 0

OpenStudy (welshfella):

the 2 roots you get are the 2 intercepts

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A parabol can interce[t the x axis in two places. When do you intercept the x axis? When y = 0. Therefore, you need to set y = 0 to find the x-interxepts

OpenStudy (welshfella):

this equation won't factor so you need to use either the quadratic formula or completing the square

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because I know the vertex is (1,-6) but im just lost after that

geerky42 (geerky42):

The vertex has nothing to do here. To find x-intercepts, you just set \(y = 0\), then solve for x
