solve( -18x^3+17x+6)/(3x+2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Minecraft.

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

so, do you know how to set this up? What have you tried so far?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So far I have tried FOIL and come up with a completely bizarre answer that isn't one of the answers.

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

ohk, so, this is called polynomial division or uhm, it has another name I forget at the moment

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

we set it up like long division from when we were little

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

so we have to use draw to make this look pretty so give me a moment to set it up, then it's pretty self explanitory

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

|dw:1428850791617:dw|

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

so now, we ask ourselves, what would I have to multiply 3x by to make it 18x^3?

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

can you tell me?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I believe it is 44?

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

44*3x=18x^3?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well when squared and then rooted yes.

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

that's a long division, we don't square and root, just multiply to make them equal

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

like literally (___)*3x=18x^3, fill in the blank

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I squared like this: 18x * 18x * 18x Then I divided by 3x and rooted the answer...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6x^2?

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

sorry if I wasn't clear, here this video will explain the process https://www.khanacademy.org/math/algebra2/polynomial_and_rational/dividing_polynomials/v/polynomial-division

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

yes 6x^2 was what I was fishing for

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

so now, we multiply (3x+1)(6x^2) then we subtract like long division it will look like this...

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

|dw:1428851284090:dw| that's a plus

OpenStudy (anonymous):

30x^5?

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

where did you get that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wait I see where this is going...

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

ok, now you see? It is just long division but your doing polynomials instead

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6x^2+4x-3?

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

where did you get the 6x^2 from? and the 4x and the 3?

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

|dw:1428851522437:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Division of powers and FOIL combined made the answer

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

noo, forget those for the moment

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

you don't use foil

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

nnor combine exponents, just adding and subtracting here

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

you're overthinking this

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh I hate overthinking... have devious plans in mind for myself when I do that... >:)

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

uhm, ok, but anyways, o yourself a favor, watch the khanacademy video maybe two or 3 of them, then come back. It will make a heck of a lot more sense

OpenStudy (anonymous):

kk thx for the reference :)

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

np, but seriously, watch it, then you'll be like ahhhhhhhhhhh I was over complicating it (I did the same thing when I learned this the first time, it made no sense till khan)
