Use the sequence 3, -6, 12, -24, … to answer the questions below a. Explain, using complete sentences whether this sequence is arithmetic or geometric and why.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think its geometric but why?

OpenStudy (♪chibiterasu):

An arithmetic sequence is additive. Geometric is multiplicative.

OpenStudy (♪chibiterasu):

So yes, geometric because it is multiplicative.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yep, you're multiplying by -2 each time.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Arithmetic = Adding the same amount to get each term Geometric = Multiplying the same amount to get each term

OpenStudy (♪chibiterasu):

Yea, and we know that because if you take one number and divide it by the preceding number, it gives you -2. i.e. 12/-6 = -2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks, What are the next three terms of the sequence?

OpenStudy (♪chibiterasu):

Multiply by -2. :)

OpenStudy (♪chibiterasu):

Multiply the next few numbers (-24 and the ones after that). 24 * -2 = ? and do that two more times with the next numbers.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

48, -96, 192 ?

OpenStudy (♪chibiterasu):

Yep. ^_^
