Kemp's ridley turtle is one of the most endangered sea turtles in the world. It is one of only two species of sea turtles that lays eggs in large nesting groups known as arribadas. They generally nest on beaches along Mexico's Gulf coast, with some nesting in Texas. There were once vast numbers of this kind of turtle. In fact, in 1947, at least 42,000 nested together on a beach in Mexico. Unfortunately, people harvested the eggs for eating. As a result, the Kemp's ridley turtle population had greatly reduced by the 1960s. In 1966, Mexico passed a law forbidding harvest of the eggs, but the number of turtles continued to decline. Adult turtles also frequently got caught in fishing nets during their ocean migrations. By 1985, only 702 nests were counted. This was the smallest number ever recorded. Fortunately, with awareness of the turtle's plight, measures have been taken to protect them. Fishing nets that do not allow turtles to get trapped are now being used. In addition, there are better laws to protect the beaches where these turtles nest. Thanks to these measures, the species has gradually begun to thrive again.
Which of the following sentences could be added to the second paragraph to support the idea that efforts to save the turtle are succeeding? Many volunteers come forward each year to help save this sea turtle. Some turtles get stranded on Cape Cod, and trained volunteers work to save them. At only 2 feet long, the adult Kemp's ridley is the smallest sea turtle on Earth. An estimated 8,000 female Kemp's ridley turtles nested in 2009.
