Try Palmistry Palmistry is the practice of "reading" a person's palm to tell his or her character or future life. Try Palmistry Palmistry is the practice of "reading" a person's palm to tell his or her character or future life. Various "lines" ("heart line", "life line", etc.) and "mounts" (or bumps) give the reader clues. The palm readers study the sizes, qualities, and intersections of the lines and bumps. In some traditions, palm readers also study the fingers, fingernails, and fingerprints. Some palm readers also examine skin patterns of the palm, skin texture, and color. In addition, they study the shape of the palm and flexibility of the hand. A reader usually begins by reading the person's "dominant hand" (the hand he or she writes with or uses the most). In some traditions of palmistry, the other hand is believed to carry past-life or karmic information. The other hand is also supposed to carry genetic traits. The basis of "Classical" palmistry (the most widely taught and practiced tradition) lies in Greek mythology. Each area of the palm and fingers is related to a god or goddess. The features of that area tell the palm reader about what it means in terms of the gods. For example, the ring finger is linked with the Greek god Apollo. Thus, the features of the ring finger can tell us about art, music, sense of beauty, fame, wealth, and harmony. If you want to find out about your past, present, and future, you should definitely seek a palm reader. Passage 2 The Problem with Palmistry Very little research has been done on palmistry. The research that has been done does not prove that it is an accurate system. Those who have done the most research on palmistry are the "palm readers." The palm readers have not given convincing data to support their claims. Though there may be evidence that proves palmistry works, there is also evidence that questions its accuracy. A lot of research tests the scientific nature of palmistry. Most scientific claims of palmistry focus on medical and psychological disorders. Many studies have related hand features to psychology, including AD/HD (Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder) and schizophrenia. Some hand features could also predict some medical disorders. However, these findings were not very convincing. It is equally hard to support a connection between the lines of the palm and a person's character. Skeptics, or those who doubt, often include palmists on lists of supposed psychics. Generally psychics are people who claim to know things outside of natural or scientific knowledge. Some of the supposed psychics are known to practice a technique called "cold reading." Cold reading allows readers of all kinds, including palmists, to appear psychic. Fortune telling is much less common today in palmistry than it was in the past. People still assume that all palm readers are fortune tellers and link palmistry with fortune telling rather than reading character. 1. How does the information in the first passage differ from the second passage? The first passage describes the practice of palmistry; the second passage questions the believability of palmistry. The first passage gives a scientific point of view of palmistry; the second passage expresses an opinion about palmistry. The second passage does not cite any sources; the first passage does not need to be supported by scientific evidence. The second passage describes palmistry as a human activity; the first passage describes the divine nature of palmistry.
