because it wasn't my own work???
is there some rule i've missed while you guys have gone nutso and changed the entire website?

Where did you post it, and it's always been like that.

Posting something that isn't your own work in like the writing, design, or music section (unless if they are questions for that specific subject) is against the Subject rules and somewhere in the TaC.
