The state song "Georgia on My Mind" by Hoagy Carmichael was originally written about a woman with that name. After Ray Charles sang it, the state legislature voted it the state song. Ray Charles sang it on the legislative floor when the bill passed. This act was important because Ray Charles was the first African-American to walk into the legislature. Georgia needed a new state song to represent the rise of the two-party system. it symbolized the growing importance of Georgia in the U.S. economy. it symbolized to many the move away from segregation and racism.
