Many know the name Orville and Wilber Wright; however, many other people have also made contributions to aviation. One such person was Wiley Post. Post was born in Texas in 1899, and he always dreamed of flying.
Surprisingly, after losing one of his eyes in an oil rig accident, his wish came true. His accident pay helped him to buy an old plane. After a few lessons from a friend, he started a flying business. In addition to flying around company bosses, Post began to fly to break flight records.
In 1931, he circled the globe in less than 9 days. Later, he helped to design an automatic pilot and direction finder for the Army. Then, he set himself to become the first person to fly around the world alone. After he succeeded in doing so, the New York Times applauded Posts' automatic equipment and said, "Commercial flying in the future will be automatic."
Posts' biggest achievement came when he created the world's first space suit and wore it as he rode through high-level jet stream winds. Then, just five months later, Post and his good friend Will Rogers died in a flying accident.
