How do "I Sit and Look Out" and "First they came for..." compare in terms of tone and mood? How do these elements support the theme of each poem?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

"I Sit and Look Out" Walt Whitman I Sit and look out upon all the sorrows of the world, and upon all oppression and shame; I hear secret convulsive sobs from young men, at anguish with themselves, remorseful after deeds done; I see, in low life, the mother misused by her children, dying, neglected, gaunt, desperate; I see the wife misused by her husband—I see the treacherous seducer of young women; I mark the ranklings of jealousy and unrequited love, attempted to be hid—I see these sights on the earth; I see the workings of battle, pestilence, tyranny—I see martyrs and prisoners; I observe a famine at sea—I observe the sailors casting lots who shall be kill'd, to preserve the lives of the rest; I observe the slights and degradations cast by arrogant persons upon laborers, the poor, and upon negroes, and the like; All these—All the meanness and agony without end, I sitting, look out upon, See, hear, and am silent. "First they came for..." Martin Niemöller First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out-— Because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Trade Unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out-— Because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me. Use the excerpts above to write an essay, at least two paragraphs, supporting the question below. Remember to clearly state your main point and use quotes from the text to support your response using the proper MLA format.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmmm...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do you think it first came for?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

First u have to know what a tone and mood is

OpenStudy (anonymous):

tone is the volume of the poem and mood is the feeling of it right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the mood is sad and uncertain

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If is sad and uncertain the tone has to be like passive or calm :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes it is now how should I write this out?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmm..let me think

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well, the mood is sad and uncertain meaning the tone is passive and calm. you should be able to take it from there.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'll start out with this how did I sit and look out first came for? was that it came to be sad and uncertain with a mood of sad and uncertain as the tone. These elements support the poem because the poem is sad and uncertain because

OpenStudy (anonymous):

good keep going!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I need help with the rest what else can I say? I need a few more sentences.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

say something like the way he felt determines the mood and tone.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how did he feel? hmm...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well...jealousy and unrequited love, neglected, gaunt, desperate; sorrow, shame, and anguish. so, what can you make up out of that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

these elements support the poem because in the poem for his tone he is jealous and sorrow and shame. The mood element supports this poem because he is neglected, gaunt, and sad

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay very good now put it all together and revise a little and you will have it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

will you help me revise this I just really wanna make sure i get this right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay hold on it will take a little bit

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay that's fine thank you again!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How did I sit and look out first came for? Was it that it came to be sad and uncertain with passive and calm as the tone. These elements support the poem because the poem is full of different feelings and it sums up all of the feelings. These elements support the poem because for his tone he is jealous ,and sorrow, and shame. The mood element supports this poem because he is neglected, gaunt, and sad. in conclusion, this all becomes what he feels and how the speaker feels as well.
