I would go with A A machine may have one simple function, if you add more simple functions it becomes more complex.

I would also go with D. B& C are out of the question. The problem with A, is that there is no such thing as a "basic" machine unless you use it interchangeably with simple. If that was the case then A would not be the right answer. Also not all simple machines are comprised of just one piece. For instance a door - knob is basically a wheel and and axle combined to give leverage, but has two parts to it. So I would with D.
One of man's first basic machine was the fulcrum and lever used to move heavy objects. Also the use of friction to create fire. You may not consider these machines but they are the bases for many others.
