Well, you use permutations for something where the order is important and combinations when the order doesn't matter.

For example if we said there was a fruit salad with a combination of oranges bananas and grapes we do not care about the order so we use a combination. But if I told you that the code to a lock is 472 the order does matter. So can you figure it out?
