How did bad leadership cause civil war in America? ?

Many political leaders made the sectional division worst. But even if the leaders made better choices, could civil war be not inevitable? because it seems like the kansas-nebraska act by douglas really ruined everything because of the imbalance in free states/slave states. and the leaders who caused the mexican war and who gave the U.S more territory, which means more conflicts, to inflame sectional divisions. My question is if the act wasn't passed, but they extended the missouri compromise's line, would sectional tension occur which means that civil war could be avoided. AND that free/slave states can exist if they are balanced in power?
