OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

How does a ship made of material have a larger density than water but is still able to float on water?

iYuko (iyuko):

Their is a lot of air at the bottom.

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

What do you mean?

iYuko (iyuko):

hence the ship is built in such a way that its mass is less than its volume and hence density is less than ONE hence the ship floats on water.it is also to the fact that pressure is a factor of force/ area. So the greater the area lesser the pressure. similar is the concept why camel's feet does not sink in sand where as human's feet sinks.

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

Oh I see. Thank you.

iYuko (iyuko):

When the boat is placed in water it moves the water out of place and that water wants to back to it's place and this pushes the ship up

iYuko (iyuko):

You are welcome :)
