The old Democratic party evolved into Dixiecrats after WWII. This wing of the party was pro segregation and opposed civil rights changes. This view was prevelent mostly in the South, the former Confederacy. It was the Democrats who advocated keeping slavery and breaking away from the US and segregation in the 1800. The Dixiecrats still had those opinions.
