It did, and still does. Originally built to keep the Huns (and others) out of China's borders, the Great Wall was the first of it's kind, and certainly still is (it can be even seen from space). It remains as one of the 7 wonders of the world; a fact which, goes to show how much it has impacted and awed people and generations around the globe.
