A miner descended 1400 feet into a mine from the mine's entrance. While in the mine, he then rose 800 feet and then descended 450 feet. What was the miner's net gain or loss in altitude from the entrance of the mine? A. 2650 ft B. –2650 ft C. –1050 ft D. 250 ft

when you see the word "descended" this means he went DOWN and this means it will be a negative :) When you see the word "rose" , this means he went UP and this means a plus so it will be a positive. SO basically your question is : He descended 1400 ( -1400) and then he rose 800 ( +800) and then descended 450 (-450). So what do you think that total would be? :) Add everything in the brackets together so : -1400 + 800 - 450 = ?
