when you see the word "descended" this means he went DOWN and this means it will be a negative :)
When you see the word "rose" , this means he went UP and this means a plus so it will be a positive.

SO basically your question is :
He descended 1400 ( -1400) and then he rose 800 ( +800) and then descended 450 (-450).

So what do you think that total would be? :)
Add everything in the brackets together so :
-1400 + 800 - 450 = ?
