The sport of fencing is very different from a scene in Zorro in which the protagonist is seen swinging from chandeliers and jumping on tables. Most of the action in fencing is actually confined to a 6-by-40-feet mat. The only way to score points is to strike an opponent on his or her torso. The action occurs so quickly in fencing that an electronic system is responsible for determining whether accurate hits have occurred. The fencer being attacked defends himself by use of a "parry," which is a defensive motion designed to deflect an opponent's blade. A "riposte" is an offensive attack. Balance, speed, and accuracy are all critical issues in this sport, as well as the ability to anticipate an opponents' moves.
