I think that Shakespeare reason to explain the characters the way he did was because if you just put a bland character there, then it wouldn't have been a success. . .or Shakespeare for that case since he could always bring up the best personalities from a character. He needed his characters to relate to the reader and to do that, he need to show off the personalities of his protagonist. Does that answer the question? By any chance?
