OpenStudy (mr.coolio):

I have a complicated question that may confuse or anger some people.

OpenStudy (mr.coolio):

I am having trouble understanding time.

OpenStudy (mr.coolio):

From the way I see it time is just a man made concept that doesnt actually exist.

OpenStudy (mr.coolio):

So something like Time travel would be impossible because you would not be able to travel through a concept... Is this correct?

OpenStudy (mr.coolio):

Yet if time doesn't exist then what are we basing our lives off of?

OpenStudy (mr.coolio):

How are we documenting the different things that happen through history?

OpenStudy (crashonce):

interesting but its

OpenStudy (mr.coolio):

What how?

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

Relative time can be measured.

OpenStudy (irishboy123):

this is one question IMHO that is guaranteed to lead to a sore head if considered properly. what astonishes me is that the leading experts think that all of time is already laid out and is somehow accessible, the past as we remember/label it and the future that we have yet to experience. quite in the same way that space is laid out. but time definitely exists and is not just some mathematical construct used to square off some equation somewhere. it is linked with the second law of thermodynamics and in that sense time *must be*. human perception is a major limiting factor in a lot of this stuff.

OpenStudy (mr.coolio):

SO what your saying is that time exists because the concept of time makes it exist........ But that would mean that a concept could basically create itself. and that time exists because it is time

OpenStudy (mr.coolio):

I was thinking that maybe we are wrong in out assumptions of time

OpenStudy (mr.coolio):

Maybe we are close to understanding something that originated as a concept but is actually something that defines the world as a law. However We are unable to discover this thing called "TIME" because like you said human perception does not allow us to understand this new "law"

OpenStudy (irishboy123):

how would motion work without time? and that argument has i think to work both ways. motion, time, space are all part of the same thing. then, the direction of time - one directional - comes from the notion of entropy. our perceptions are actually very tied into ideas of entropy without or ever really thinking about it. you'd be amazed if you came back from vacation and your lawn was shorter/tidier than when you left! so maybe entropy is like the really fundamental thing in this. i have no idea, really! but it's interesting

OpenStudy (alekos):

motion cannot work without time, therefore life cannot really exist. the 3D space-time reality requires time as a fundamental factor

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but *actually* from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint - it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly... time-y wimey... stuff.

OpenStudy (mr.coolio):

Don't even, I know that is a reference to something but I am not sure what (maybe Dr. Who) so don't try that with me lol @BloomLocke367

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

it is Doctor Who XD I had to..

OpenStudy (mr.coolio):

@icecreamman i see you looking a this buddy so you have to respond lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

reading this but idk who doctor who is but lol this is confuzzling me a bit. time is to measure how long something is tho right?

OpenStudy (mr.coolio):

Doctor Who is a show that deals with time travel. Time measures the .... well thats kinda my point what does time measure. lol it measures time right? whelp I don't know

OpenStudy (anonymous):

maybeif like einstein were here we would understand this concept better

OpenStudy (mr.coolio):

Not really he dealt more in Physics and some mathematics and did'nt take a philosophical point on things in life.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh then maybe aristotle?

OpenStudy (mr.coolio):

there you go

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:D

OpenStudy (mr.coolio):

Lol but according to this discussion time travel is impossible sooo That is definitely not happening.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do u believe in time travel?

OpenStudy (mr.coolio):

Well that is what I was discussing such a thing as time travel would be impossible because time is a man made concept that doesn't actually exist. and yet without are whole existence is invalid.

OpenStudy (bloomlocke367):

I believe that if you're moving fast enough, yes.... and if you think about it, in a way, if you fly west... you go back in time... think about the time difference

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what do you mean taht it is invalid. its just that it was wayback then and we cannot get back to wayback then

OpenStudy (mr.coolio):

Ohhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We base Time off of the movements of the sun so according to Bloom Locke time is incorrect becuase the sun is what we base the idea of time off of . So for time travel to succeed we would have to turn the sun and the whole galaxy in the opposite direction.

OpenStudy (mr.coolio):

But this would not actually propel us back in time it would just make the clocks useless

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that is correct i believe :D

OpenStudy (mr.coolio):

lol so the traditional idea of bringing us back to world war 2 is impossible but actually turning back the concept of time we have created all we have to do is make the galaxy spin in reverse :)

OpenStudy (mr.coolio):

simple right? lol

OpenStudy (mr.coolio):

dang so complicated XD

OpenStudy (anonymous):

makes my head whirl lol

OpenStudy (mr.coolio):

No thats the galaxy :D LOL

OpenStudy (mr.coolio):

lol that horrible nerd joke

OpenStudy (anonymous):

XDXDXDXDXD

OpenStudy (alekos):

According to Einsteins theory of relativity it's not possible to go back in time, but it is possible to move forward in time relative to the earth, provided you can reach a speed that is close to light. So you would accelerate towards the nearest star, say Alpha Centauri, reach 99% of light speed, stay at that speed for 6 months then do a u-turn and come back and you will find that 8 years had passed on earth compared to your 1 year on a space ship.

read some science, say "a brief history of time"
