Is it ok to download Python 2.7.9 instead of 2.5.4 for this course?

Yes it should be all right. I am using 2.7 and it's working perfectly fine

There are very few things that break from 2.x changes. It was not until they went to 3.x that they dropped a lot of things.

There are a few things in 2.7 that would not work in 2.5, but nothing truly significant to the class.

on this course (at edX) instructors are suggesting to use free python package (32 bit) from https://store.enthought.com/

This package has build-in a lot of libraries which can be usefull for you during this and next studies.
