This data set gives the scores of 41 students on a biology exam: {66, 67, 67, 68, 80, 81, 81, 82, 22, 65, 66, 68, 69, 70, 71, 71, 71, 72, 72, 73, 73, 74, 75, 78, 78, 78, 78, 79, 79, 80, 80, 82, 83, 75, 75, 75, 76, 77, 83, 83, 99} Which of the following is the best measure of the central tendency? a. mean b.median c.mode d.range
@shifuyanli
what do you think @Najia2000
Median
okay now define median for me please :)
Anything thats in the middle.
okay define mean
Mean = Average
define mode
A number that is repeated.
okay now define range
Range is the highest value minus lowest value
so what is the most reasonable answer to you?
I honestly think its either median or mean now.
median is middle it will in the end come down to one number so itt is..?
is it mean?
I'm more than confused right now. Can you tell me what central tendency is?
nonononononononononononono
Sorryyyy.
Definition of CENTRAL TENDENCY. : the degree of clustering of the values of a statistical distribution that is usually measured by the arithmetic mean, mode, or median.
Okay. So is it median? I really think its median right?
yes! :)
but ask @amistre64 first I just got in my math groove LOL
@amistre64 do you agree?
is that a 22 in there?
Yup.
outlier!!
What?^
22 is an outlier right?
outliers skew the mean giving a false impression.
oh...
Oh okay. So it is median though right?
i thought so
what our mode? do we have more than 1?
@Najia2000 ^
We only have one 22.
22 is not a mode, its an outlier
what is our mode? what number or number are used the most often?
yep it is
78 is used most often
75 and 78 are used equally as often
since we have more than one mode that represents it, then mode is not a good measure of central tendency mean is out, mode is out, range is just absurd lol that leaves us the median yes
Lol, thanks alot @amistre64 Do you know a link perhaps where i can practice more of these?
nothing other than the one i gave you earlier. it has literally ton of problems to work thru.
medain : middle number *OR* *average of middle two numbers*
41/2 is not going to give us an average ...
Thanks! and @Nnesha Your a little late anyways. :P
\(\color{blue}{\text{Originally Posted by}}\) @shifuyanli median is middle it will in the end come down to one number so itt is..? \(\color{blue}{\text{End of Quote}}\) .^
for this data set, the middle number is the median; we have an odd number of datapoints which by default gives us a singular value from the dataset.
ik that that's a definition in general maybe it will help her for the next question :-)
Thanks for that.
