company develops a new weed-killing chemical. When the chemical is first used, it kills nearly all the weeds. Which statement explains why after 10 years, nearly all the weeds can tolerate the chemical and survive? A. At first, most of the weeds were resistant to the chemical. Only the few weeds that were resistant to (or could tolerate) the chemical survived and reproduced, but did not pass any of these traits to their offspring.

B. The company needed to apply another application since all of the weeds were immediately resistant to the chemical. Those resistant weeds survived and reproduced, passing on traits that helped them survive onto their mutant offspring. C. At first, most of the weeds were sensitive to the chemical. Only the few weeds that were resistant to (or could tolerate) the chemical survived and reproduced, passing on traits that helped them survive. D. At first, none of the weeds were resistant to the chemical. Over time, a few of the weeds became resistant to (or could tolerate) the chemical survived and reproduced, but did not pass any of these traits to their offspring.

I think either C or D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it would be C because at the end of D it says it did not pass on the traits which would be false

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, the beginning of D sounds good but that would not be true, so C is your best answer.
