Why might Brazil have so strongly stressed the growing of coffee in the early 20th century? Brazilian citizens drank more coffee than any other country. Brazil ended up with excess coffee that the government bought to help the economy. Growing coffee was a way to keep citizens busy and prevent protests. The government was controlled by elite landowners who grew coffee.
