.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@rational can you help me resolve this?

OpenStudy (rational):

Notice that the shaded region is centered around 4

OpenStudy (rational):

so the inequality would be \[|x-4| \le 1\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right

OpenStudy (rational):

all the points that are less than or equal to 1 unit from 4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how did you determine the direction in which the arrow went? Because 4 is bigger than 1?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but at the end it's actually |x-4| <= 1 then.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so I was initially wrong. I'm going to have to look all this over again.

OpenStudy (rational):

because the shaded region is with in 1 unit from 4 so the distance from 4 is less than or equal to 1

OpenStudy (rational):

|x-4| <= 1 says the distance from 4 to x is less than or equal to 1

OpenStudy (rational):

remember the distance between any two points on number line can be obtained by take the absolute value of difference of their coordinates

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay thanks for correcting me on this thing. :)

OpenStudy (rational):

np:)
