A group of biologists found a total of 28 loggerhead turtle nests along a beach during a certain season. This was 40% of the total number of turtle nests the group found during that season. What was the total number of turtle nests the group found during that season? (:

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hmm, let me see. I know the answer but the tricky part is explaining it without giving the answer right away.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Take your time and thank you

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[\frac{ 28 }{ 40 }=\frac{ x }{ 100 }\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you know how to solve that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, it makes more sense, thank you.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Btw for future reference, in problems like this there's a shortcut. If you just divide the given number by the percentage (written as a fraction) you'd also get the same answer. In this case 28/0.4 (which is the same as what I have given above, just much faster). I don't think I need to explain why this works, but I can give proof if you want.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sure

The answer is 70 thanks so much for the help @zimmah

you're welcome
