So, what is happening these is this:
The rlap makes the spacing the blue would do not happen, so the teal and it overlap. Then there is a \: to add a space so they do not overlap 100%.

Note that the rlapped part is ON TOP! So if you want a shadow, it must come second.

If you want the shadow to be to the left, the first bit of text needs the extra space:

If you want more control over going back and forward, you can use \hspace with negative values.
