In this essay, I will be comparing and contrasting the theme “Meaning of freedom” in the two short stories “Harrison Bergeron” by Vonnegut, and “A&P” by Updike. The meaning of freedom is expressed in many ways in some books. The most popular type of freedom in literature is usually being free of the constraints of society. “Harrison Bergeron” and “A&P” share the common theme of freedom but they both express it in different ways. For example, in “A&P,” the meaning of freedom is expressed by the clerk taking off his clothes and walking out of the store; In “Harrison Bergeron,” it is expressed by a single individual telling people that you can be yourself and to not let society shape you.
