Byzantium was located at the intersection of 2 great continents and the water connection between the Black and Mediterranean Sea. Lots of land and ocean trade routes nearby. That's why Constantine chose the site to build a city named after himself. Then with the emperor in residence, all sorts of people flocked to the city. Especially as Rome disintegrated.
