You could say that Mendel Asked the question of how there was variations between pea plants and experimented using  this plant because of how easily they can be used in genetic research.
Hypothesis-  that pea plants could cross pollinate and pass genes from each generation to the next.
Test- He collected various different types of pea plants varying from color, pea size,etc.
Collection of data- He recorded the differences bettween each generation.
Mendel- concluded that all traits come in different versions. 
Ex: purple vs. White flower color show the two different alleles (Purple & White)
