OpenStudy (howard-wolowitz):

Can someone check my answer! I got B

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

Question?

OpenStudy (howard-wolowitz):

before you ask... click to zoom

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

\(\textit{function transformations} \\ \quad \\ \begin{array}{llll} \begin{array}{llll} shrink\ or\\ expand\\ by\ {\color{purple}{ A}}\end{array} \qquad \begin{array}{llll} vertical\\ shift\\ by \ {\color{green}{ D}} \end{array} \begin{array}{llll}{\color{green}{ D}} > 0& Upwards\\ {\color{green}{ D}} < 0 & Downwards\end{array} \\ % template start \qquad \downarrow\qquad\qquad\quad\ \downarrow\\ y = {\color{purple}{ A}} \sqrt{ x + {\color{red}{ 4}} } + {\color{green}{ 3}}\\ %template end \qquad\qquad \quad \uparrow \\ \qquad\begin{array}{llll} horizontal\\ shift\\ by \ {\color{red}{ C}}\end{array} \begin{array}{llll}{\color{red}{ C}} > 0 & to\ the\ left\\ {\color{red}{ C}} < 0& to\ the\ right\end{array} \end{array}\)

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

Not quite. \(\Large y=\sqrt[3]{x-h}+k\) h= horizontal translation k = vertical translation

OpenStudy (howard-wolowitz):

ok then D is correct guys?

OpenStudy (howard-wolowitz):

h would mean -4 left

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

hehe are you even reading the transformations templates?

OpenStudy (howard-wolowitz):

+3 would be up

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

No. Notice the question says "x-4"

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

yes +3 is up and -4 is?

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

meaning h=4

OpenStudy (howard-wolowitz):

yes I am looking at what you guys wrote but ... is this another opposite one

OpenStudy (howard-wolowitz):

but h isnt positive

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

h is positive.

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

ohh wait a sec... thought it was -4 dohh ahemm

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

x - h x - 4 thus, h = 4

OpenStudy (howard-wolowitz):

well ok.. but thats a stupid math rule

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

anyhow \(\textit{function transformations} \\ \quad \\ \begin{array}{llll} \begin{array}{llll} shrink\ or\\ expand\\ by\ {\color{purple}{ A}}\end{array} \qquad \begin{array}{llll} vertical\\ shift\\ by \ {\color{green}{ D}} \end{array} \begin{array}{llll}{\color{green}{ D}} > 0& Upwards\\ {\color{green}{ D}} < 0 & Downwards\end{array} \\ % template start \qquad \downarrow\qquad\qquad\quad\ \downarrow\\ y = {\color{purple}{ A}} \sqrt{ x - {\color{red}{ 4}} } + {\color{green}{ 3}}\\ %template end \qquad\qquad \quad \uparrow \\ \qquad\begin{array}{llll} horizontal\\ shift\\ by \ {\color{red}{ C}}\end{array} \begin{array}{llll}{\color{red}{ C}} > 0 & to\ the\ left\\ {\color{red}{ C}} < 0& to\ the\ right\end{array} \end{array}\) there

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

Why do you say that? @Howard-Wolowitz

OpenStudy (howard-wolowitz):

why does it have to be positive if its already negative?

OpenStudy (howard-wolowitz):

I'm going with C

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

C is correct.

OpenStudy (howard-wolowitz):

Thanks guys!

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

math rules are made by observation of phenomena patterns so, is not like we tell nature to make "stupid" rules is that nature makes them and we write them down in a notation or formula now if you think they're "stupid" well, tell nature that :)

OpenStudy (howard-wolowitz):

my problem is that I dont get why they switch values

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

Notice this: x - h You have x - 4 So... x - h = x - 4 -h = -4 h = 4 So, the value of h was never negative.

OpenStudy (howard-wolowitz):

I think I understand.. but you admit its dumb

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

hmm we've just covered that about 5mins ago in the previous one how come is an issue? assuming you're really reading the templates :)

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

I don't think its dumb.

OpenStudy (howard-wolowitz):

no i get it but this is my first time doing it

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

On the other hand, if it had been x + 4... x - h = x + 4 -h = 4 h = -4 See the difference?

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

well... one can say the Sun is dumb by going around the sky every 24hrs or the earth is dumb by orbiting the Sun but math wise, is just something we wrote in notation or formula is not like we tell the Sun or the Earth what to do according to our "dumb" rules

OpenStudy (howard-wolowitz):

I see, so I will switch them always

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

^yep. It's just something someone observed, and made a little handy formula to use.

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

@Howard-Wolowitz yeah, I guess you can view it as "switching" them
