Recall that multiplication by an integer can be thought of as repeated addition. For example 4x5= 5+5+5+5. Use this view of multiplication and a model of signed numbers (chip model/number line) to explain why the product of a positive integer and a negative integer is negative. Illustrate with 3x-4. How would you interpret the product -5x6? What property of multiplication are you using?
