With 13 colonies there are 13 different answers, but they can be grouped together into three categories. Some of the colonies were founded purely as a means of creating wealth, such as Virginia, the Carolinas, and New York. Some colonies were created as havens for various populations, such as Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Georgia. Others had some combination of the two, thinking Massachusetts and Maryland as prime examples.
