He was Intelligent. He voted against the stamp act and the intolerable acts because he knew they were stupid. He was the best general the british had. If General Howe had given him an independent command in 1776, he could have destroyed the Revolution. Later the British sent him to India where he helped make a new empire. He was then Governor General of Ireland during the 1795 rebellion. Cornwallis realized he was dealing with irish peasants. So he told his generals to advance slowly and give the irish rebels to get tired and go home. The french had landed with 20,000 muskets, by the time Cornwallis actually arrived, the rebels were down to 1000 Irish and 1,000 french soldiers. The French surrendered. The Irish were butchered and their corpses were hung from trees.
