Help with vector magnitude

OpenStudy (darkbluechocobo):

Find the magnitude of a vector, v , whose initial point is (5, 8) and terminal point is (2, 3). Approximate your answer to the nearest hundredth.

OpenStudy (darkbluechocobo):

(2-5,3-8)

OpenStudy (darkbluechocobo):

(-3,-5)? sqrt(-3^2)+(-5^2?)

OpenStudy (darkbluechocobo):

@freckles

OpenStudy (freckles):

checking the result myself \[\sqrt{(2-5)^2+(3-8)^2} \\ \sqrt{(-3)^2+(-5)^2} \\ \sqrt{3^2+5^2}\] so far you are right except put the square round the (-3) and (-5) like (-3)^2 and not (-3^2)

OpenStudy (darkbluechocobo):

so sqrt of 34?

OpenStudy (darkbluechocobo):

Yeh i saw what happens when I do it the way I did it comes up imaginary

OpenStudy (freckles):

yeah I think 9+25 is 34 so yeah you should have sqrt(34)

OpenStudy (darkbluechocobo):

Thank you :D
