Given: 3x < -9. Choose the solution set. {x | x < 3} {x | x > -1/3} {x | x < -3} {x | x > -3} would i keep the inequality? since I'm dividing a negative by a positive.
alright, so what did you do?
i took -9 divided by 3.
and got -3
i think it would be {x | x < -3}
That's right
do you know what that --> x|... means?
i was just making sure because the divisor was positive. and isn't it read as "x such as...."
well, it's actually such that but such as sort of works too. So it means that we define our x value such that it satisfies the expression x< -3.
A lot of people seem to gloss over what the notation actually means, it's just as important as know ing how to solve the problem.
really? cause my Odysseyware, what i do all my schooling on, says such as...weird..
i believe you i just got confused is all.
yea, I mean if you replace the that with as does the sentence still make sense, yes, is it as clear not quite. We could also write \[\{x\in R : x<-3\}\]
That would read, X is a real number such that it satisfies x is less than negative three.
well, that makes sense.
It's all about reading the sentence, if We were to do such as we would have "x such as x<-3 is satisfied" Which though a sentence doesn't make nearly as much sense as the such that version
wow, whoever made my class should of went back to english..
yea, we are math people not english, right?
because such as does not make sense. and right:)
But alot of times being able to read something properly can tell you the answer when you don't know it. For example here, you could have used guess and check very easily, but if you did not understand the notation, you may not understand the answer choices
I always teach my kids that skill because it really saves your butt on the plethora of standardized tests you all have to take in this day and age.
which does not make sence..
yea, so, english is actually important in math. Who knew? :P
Right?! well, thank you for helping me! im sure ill need help later on!:)
np, just be confident, you got this. I didn't really have to do much at all, this was pretty much all you :)
