☻A short description on 'THE GENETIC TERMS'☻

♦Gene = A sequence of bases on a DNA molecule that codes for a protein which results in a characteristic e:g the gene for eye colour.
♦Allele = A different version of a gene. Different versions have slightly different base sequences which code for different versions of the same characteristics e:g brown eyes and blue eyes.
♦Genotype = The genetic make up of an individual
♦Phenotype= The physical appearance of an individual
♦ Dominant = An allele whose characteristics appears in the phenotype even there's only one copy.Dominant alleles are shown by a capital letter
♦ Recessive= An allele whose characteristics ONLY appears in the phenotype of two copies are present . Recessive alleles are shown by a lower case letter
♦Homozygote = An organism that carries two copies of the same allele e:g BB OR bb
♦Heterozygote = An organism that carries two different alleles e:g Bb
♦Carrier - If a recessive allele can cause disease, a carrier is someone who has one dominant and one recessive allele (heterozygous). They WONT have the disease but they carry a copy of the allele for the disease.
