George designed an experiment to determine the number of calories consumed daily in the average American diet. The procedure he used for his experiment is shown below. Find 100 volunteers to record everything they eat for a week Ask volunteers what their favorite dessert is Collect volunteers' records For each volunteer, calculate the total number of calories taken in during the week Divide each volunteer's total calorie count by seven and then average the 100 participants' daily calorie consumption Which step in George's experimental procedure is unnecessary?

b Step 2 "Ask volunteers what their favorite dessert is" is the answer. This is unnecessary because how much they like a dessert doesn't really change the results. What you want to know is what they actually HAVE eaten.
