Darrell tried to solve the equation x2 + 10x = -9 by completing the square. His work and some of his answers are shown below. Each red blank, marked with a letter A, should be filled in with the same number. Each blue blank, marked with the letter B, should be filled in with the same expression. Each green blank, marked with the letter C, should be filled in with the same number. Enter the number, expression, and number that fill in blanks A, B, and C correctly. Separate your answers with commas, like this: 42, 3x-4, 53

go to the blue link

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

ok that works, next time you can follow steps like this http://www.take-a-screenshot.org/ and not need to resort to a complicated link like that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol ok

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

anyways, what we do is this the x coordinate is 10, take half of 10 to get _____ (fill in the blank)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thars where i get confused

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

what is half of 10? or 10 divided by 2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

now square that to get ???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2.24

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

square not square root

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

to square a number, you just multiply it with itself

OpenStudy (anonymous):

25

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so that will go in slot A

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

because you add 25 to both sides to help complete the square

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

x^2 + 10x + 25 then factors to (x+5)^2 since it is a perfect square you can check that by expanding out (x+5)^2 and you will get x^2 + 10x + 25

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so thts the equation

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

\[\Large x^2 + 10x = -9\] \[\Large x^2 + 10x+{\color{red}{25}} = -9+{\color{red}{25}}\] \[\Large (x+5)^2 = 16\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i get it thank u

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
