Evaluate the following expression: (-7+3i)(5+1)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This one is actually pretty simple. Foil the expression. Then you should get your answer.

OpenStudy (dmndlife24):

add the 5 and 1 in parenthesis first

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry, I typed it wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It should be (-7+3i)(5+i)

OpenStudy (dmndlife24):

do you know how to distribute?

OpenStudy (dmndlife24):

distribute the 7 into each term in the second expression and the same with the 3i which is just like foiling

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, but I just wasn't sure if it was different with imaginary numbers. So it should be -35 -7i + 15i + 4i?

OpenStudy (dmndlife24):

Almost... -35 -7i + 15i + 3i^2 Now add like terms and remember i^2 = -1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So -35 - 7i + 15i - 3? Which would be -32 -8i?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Excuse me, -32 +8i

OpenStudy (dmndlife24):

Well i would just look at it this way... -35-3 and... -7i+15i

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So, -32 + 8i would be correct?

OpenStudy (dmndlife24):

Well you forgot the -32 - 3 which equals -38

OpenStudy (dmndlife24):

sorry -35 -3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ohhhhh duh. Thank you :)

OpenStudy (dmndlife24):

Your welcome :)
