Nick experiences disappointment and hopelessness (and all those negative things). These feelings made him hate the East which represented the modern thinking and craziness of the young people attached to wealth. By having him return to the country side (which represented the traditional old view of life) the author is implying that the modern thinking of the American Dream will only leave one with emptiness and despair... addio~
