Read the excerpt from Langston Hughes's poem "Scottsboro." That mad mob That tore the Bastile down Stone by stone. Why does Hughes draw a comparison between the Bastille and Scottsboro? Both represent sites of violent mob uprisings. Both are famous European prisons. Both are historic symbols of the oppression of liberty. Both housed prisoners who had been denied a trial.
