OpenStudy (adamk):

How many minutes will it take a rescue boat traveling 12 mi/hr to reach a boat 3,687ft away to the nearest minute? I know the unit conversion ratios I will need are 12mi/1hr, 5280ft/1mi, and 1hr/60min. But, I'm not sure what to do from there.

OpenStudy (16shuston):

What did you get when you did the unit conversion?

OpenStudy (adamk):

@16shuston 1056

OpenStudy (adamk):

Then divide 3687 by that?

OpenStudy (16shuston):

Okay I got the same thing, and yes you do. Did you get .28 minutes?

OpenStudy (adamk):

@16shuston No... I got 3.49 minutes. Which reduces to 3 minutes for the nearest minute.

OpenStudy (16shuston):

okay. what does your set up look like?

OpenStudy (adamk):

3687/1056

OpenStudy (16shuston):

okay, sorry i was in a different setting on my calculator. but you are right. Im sorry :/

OpenStudy (adamk):

@16shuston Alright, cool. And 3.49 to the nearest minute is 3 right?

OpenStudy (16shuston):

if that was rounded to the nearest minute it would first round to 3.5 which means then you would round up to 4

OpenStudy (adamk):

Oh, ok. Didn't know if I was supposed to round to the tenth first and then the nearest minute.

OpenStudy (16shuston):

yeah you usually do.

OpenStudy (adamk):

Ah, ok. Thanks!

OpenStudy (16shuston):

yep no problem :)
