find the distance, in units, from point A(3,7) to the line x=9.

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

have you drawn a diagram...?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no, i havent

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

ok... |dw:1430096660394:dw| the shortest distance is the perpendicular distance

geerky42 (geerky42):

Another angle is to note that A(3,7) lies on line x=3, which is parallel to x=7. What is distance between x=3 and x=7, in other words, what is distance between 3 and 7?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6?

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

that's it... well done

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so that's the distance from the point to the line? that was easy lol

geerky42 (geerky42):

oops x=9, not x=7...

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

lol.... diagrams help a lot... there is a formula... called perpendicular distance from a point to a line formula is the line was something like y = 3x - 2 but try to start by drawing it... and then see what you need to do

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah the diagram definitely helped.
