Tony drove 8 miles west, 6 miles north, 3 miles east, and 6 more miles north. How far was Tony from his starting place? I said 23, but apparently that's wrong..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hmmmm i got 23 too :/

OpenStudy (inowalst):

When I drew it out, in height I got 12, hence the two 6's and in width I got 11..

OpenStudy (inowalst):

OH. Because it says it went west 8, so that's left, then it came back to the east, right, 3, so that would be 5..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Nice! Glad you got it!

OpenStudy (inowalst):

Thank you. But I'm still confused as to what the answer is because in height I still have 12, from the 6's.. and I still have the 3. And the answer isn't 15.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If he starts at 0,0 where does he end up?

OpenStudy (inowalst):

Okay. Um.. 3,12?

OpenStudy (inowalst):

I dont know here, so I'm sorry.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Then use the distance formula to find the distance

OpenStudy (anonymous):

between the two points

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Distance formula: http://www.moomoomath.com/distance.jpg

OpenStudy (inowalst):

Okay. Give me a minute..

OpenStudy (inowalst):

You said he started at 0,0?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah

OpenStudy (inowalst):

Okay..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Are you alright?

OpenStudy (inowalst):

Yes, but it's not getting the right answer. ._.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah because it should be 5,12

OpenStudy (inowalst):

Bleh. Why the 5, though?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Instead of 3, 12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

8 miles west, 3 miles east 8-3 = 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Honestly you should be getting -5 but it doesnt matter for distance

OpenStudy (inowalst):

.-. Ohhhh. That's why there's a 5. Well, THANK YOU. ._.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5 isnt your answer

OpenStudy (inowalst):

No no. I know.

OpenStudy (inowalst):

Yes. I know. c:
