Common Core State Standards Writing 2.a. Include formatting, graphics, and multimedia when useful to aiding comprehension. 2.c. Use appropriate transitions to create cohesion and clarify the relationships among ideas and concepts. 5. With some guidance and support from peers and adults, develop and strengthen writing as needed by revising, focusing on how well purpose and audience have been addressed. 7. Conduct short research projects to answer a question, drawing on several sources and generating additional related, focused questions for further research and investigation. 8. Assess the credibility and accuracy of each source; and quote or paraphrase the data and conclusions of others while avoiding plagiarism and following a standard format for citation. 9. Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research. Drafting Strategies Develop a main idea or thesis. Review your prewriting notes to determine the overall focus of your report. Then, write a sentence that expresses your main idea. This sentence is called a thesis statement. As you draft, refer to your thesis statement to help keep your report focused. Example: Whales are among the most intelligent mammals on Earth. Pose relevant questions. When you research, you may come up with more questions about your topic. The questions you ask yourself should be relevant to your thesis and tightly drawn. This means you should not stray too far from the perspective you convey in your report. Make an outline. Group your prewriting notes by category. Use Roman numerals (I, II, III) to number your most important points. Under each Roman numeral, use capital letters (A, B, C) for the supporting details. Use your outline as a guide for developing your draft by turning your outline notes into complete sentences. As you outline, review the data you have collected. • Refer to the notes you made on index cards in the prewriting and researching stage. • Confirm that the supporting details you include directly relate to the thesis statement. • Delete any irrelevant information or research you have gathered. Include visuals to support key ideas. Using charts or other visual aids allows you to present detailed information that might otherwise interrupt the flow of your report. In your writing, introduce the visual and explain its purpose. Direct readers to reference these aids as needed. To create visual aids, carry out these steps: • Use databases and spreadsheets to organize, manage, and prepare information for your report. • Clarify your charts, graphs, and tables by using headings and adding appropriate spacing. • Vary the color and design of your visual aids as you display different types of information.

Analyze your organization. Look over your draft and analyze your organization to see if it matches your outline. Stop at the end of each paragraph and refer to your outline. Follow these steps: 1. Mark each paragraph with the Roman numeral and capital letter from your outline and write a key word or phrase to identify the subject of the paragraph. 2. If all the paragraphs with the same Roman numeral are not next to each other, decide whether the change is an improvement. If it is not, correct it. Check your facts. Read through your draft to verify that the facts, statistics, and quotations you cite are accurate. Don't rely on your memory—refer to the original source material as you work. With the exception of direct quotations, be sure you have written the information in your own words. Vary sentence length. To add interest to your writing, vary the length of your sentences. Underline or highlight sentences in your draft in alternating colors so you can easily see differences in length. Then, review your color coding. Combine short, choppy sentences or break up longer sentences if there are too many of either. A revised paragraph. d Review. Ask a classmate, your teacher, or another adult to read your report to determine if the organization of your draft is clear. If your reader finds areas that require transitions, consider revising your draft by adding a word, phrase, or sentence that shows the connection between your paragraphs. Use transitions such as at first, finally, or as a result to show relationships between ideas. Ask the reader for feedback as to whether or not you have supported your thesis statement adequately. Revise your report as needed based on your reviewer's comments.

okay, so what will you want to write about ? do you CHOOSE what the paper you are writing will be about, or is it a set topic ? like, the example given in this text is "Whales are among the most intelligent mammals on Earth." you need to find something to write about before anything else. can you tell me what the topic is ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Review the Work Cited slide to ensure all the citations are in MLA format. Go to p. lxxxi in Literature if you need to review MLA style citations. Did you follow the graphic design principles? See the list below: Avoid using more than two font styles in a single publication. Never use all capital letters for text other than possibly a title or heading. Add images and/or graphic art to add visual appeal and draw the audience’s attention. Make sure images are not stretched or distorted to fit a space. Avoid colors that are too similar to black or too light to read. Develop a color scheme, and stay consistent with the colors that you use. Use color to aid in organization by giving emphasis to specific areas of a design. Use horizontal and vertical lines to help break up content within the publication. Review your rough draft presentation to make sure it is complete. Use the Research Presentation Portfolio Rubric as a guide, and show your partner the following in your rough draft presentation: introduction and conclusion main point with supporting details Work Cited slide with proper MLA citation graphic aids that support understanding In preparation for the quick check, select the link to review glossary terms and definitions for this lesson.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

these are the rules and expectations for the assignment. i need the topic; what you will be making the assignment about. does it tell you what to write about ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

idk it doesn't say

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If there's nothing you can write about, then why are they asking you to do all of this unnecessary stuff?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

For all we know you could write "Screw off" in big letters and still get an A+ if they don't have a topic for you to write about.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hold on

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@harley_may

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So I'm going to go ahead and guess they want you to to come up with something to write about.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay, what do you want to write about ? is there a topic you are passionate about that you could also write a thesis statement for ? do you know what thesis statement is ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no not really

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Seems that you have no real limits to what you could write about. You could discuss the role of women in the American society within the past century, animal / drug abuse, how teenage relationships seem to be losing hope , etc..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

um

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

idk i guess i'll do the role of women in the American society within the past century, animal

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The reason why I brought that one up was simply because I'm "studying" that as well in my English course.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok so can you help me just write tdown what each one eis

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh yay click on the work paper and then write on it and then save it save it i am going to eat lunch real quick i am starving

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So for the first box in your assignment page, you're brainstorming a list of topics. Write down pretty much anything you'd like to write about, and then add "Role of American women within the past decade."

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

_Squish

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now what else do they ask of you?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok now i am going to finish my lunch real quick

OpenStudy (anonymous):

look at the paper

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay, @_Squish it seems like you have this handled for now, im going to go finish up an assignment of my own : )) if you guys need me just mention !

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You'll now have to create a question regarding American women and their role now.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

look at the paper i sent you guys

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I am.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

After you formulate your question, you would then mention "search terms." These are items that you'd put into Google to find your topic information.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok did you do the first part

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I dunno, did you?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i thought you were going to please

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I can't be the guy doing your homework for you,but I will give you the question you can use. "What rule do American women hold now compared to 100 years ago?"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what just give me the answers please its for half of my grade

OpenStudy (anonymous):

he cant do tht

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its against coc unless he wants to get suspemded like i did

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I can lead you to the answers, but I can't feed them to you.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Your next step is to find some information and cite it. Using http://easybib.com would be the simplest thing for you. After that, you're wrapping up what you've found and then finding an audience. That is to say, women.
