We should be able to set our status as "away from the computer" or "idle" or something like that. That way if people message you, they won't be offended if you don't reply.

That's an opinion. He can't speak for everyone that goes away from their computer. And he has no idea if they will or will not rack up notifications in that amount of time. Therefore, it's an opinion. :)
